Short answer: Weigh the decoration, then hang it from a hook rated well above that weight. Good options are an existing porch hook, a removable adhesive ceiling hook, a screw hook in solid wood, or a clamp-on hook over a beam. Keep it out of the walking path and away from light fixtures and wires.

Step 1: weigh the piece
A kitchen or bathroom scale works. Hanging decorations swing in the wind, and a swinging piece pulls harder than a still one, so choose a hook rated well above the weight you measured.
Step 2: choose a hook
- Existing hooks. Plant hooks and porch hooks that are already there are the easiest option. Check that they are still firmly attached.
- Removable adhesive ceiling hooks. No drilling. Check the weight limit on the package and whether the hook is made for ceilings and outdoor use. Clean and dry the surface first, and wait the maker's cure time before hanging anything. Adhesive can hold less in cold, heat or damp, so leave extra margin.
- Screw hooks and screw eyes. Screw them into solid wood, such as a porch beam, not into thin trim alone. Check the hook's weight limit. Screw holes are permanent, so renters should check with the landlord first.
- Clamp-on or over-the-beam hooks. These fit exposed beams and rails without making holes.
- Tree branches. Use a sturdy, living branch, not a dead one.
Do not hang decorations from light fixtures, ceiling fans or electrical wires.
Step 3: place it
- Measure the drop. A 47 in decoration hung from a ceiling 8 feet up ends about 4 feet above the floor, or lower once the rope is added, so hang long pieces outside the walking path.
- Space pieces apart so they do not tangle in the wind.
- Keep fabric away from candles, heat lamps and hot bulbs.
- Check hooks and ropes after windy nights.
