Short answer: Put peeping eyes low, in dark cover along the path to the door, facing the way people walk up. If you use the dusk sensor (dark activation) mode, choose spots where daylight reaches the unit during the day, so the sensor can switch the eyes off in daylight.
Good spots
- Bushes along the walkway, between knee and chest height, facing the approach.
- Under porch rails or beside the steps, where the shadow is deepest.
- Dark windows facing the street, with the room lights off.
- Different heights and distances. Spread the pairs out so they look like separate creatures, not one object.
- Test at night from the sidewalk, and move any pair you cannot see.
How the dusk sensor affects placement
Our Flashing Peeping Eyes have two modes: dark activation, which turns them on in the dark and off during the day, and a steady-on mode. For dark activation to work, the unit needs to see daylight during the day.
- Avoid spots that stay in deep shade all day. The sensor may read them as dark and keep the eyes on, which drains the batteries.
- Keep the eyes out of the direct beam of a porch light, floodlight or motion light. Bright light at night may stop them from turning on.
- Do not bury the unit under leaves or other decorations.
- If a spot is too shady for the sensor, use steady-on mode and turn the eyes off in the morning.
Batteries and size
The eyes run on AAA batteries, which are not included. Keep spares on hand. Each pair is about 5 x 3.75 x 2.5 in and has a hook for hanging, so a pair can tuck into a shrub, hang from a branch or rail, or sit in a window.
